October 2015 - Candace Jensen

Spunky and fun, Candace’s refreshing approach to life and language learning boosts the spirits of everyone around her. Her tremendous dedication and commitment have paid off as she’s taken leaps and bounds in her Spanish abilities in under two years. Having completed her university studies in German, Candace’s appreciation of language and culture runs deep and she relishes opportunities to attend concerts, plays, and other cultural events in Spanish. The versatility she’s gained by wearing many hats in her professional life and exploring a wide range of interests from gardening and vegan baking to playing the piano surely informs her supportive attitude as a classmate. We’re grateful to count Candace as part of our community at Tierra!

Name: Candace Jensen
Occupation: in transition
Studying at Tierra: Since Jan. 2014

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"I've always wanted to speak, comprehend, read, and write Spanish for both sentimental and practical reasons. With vast Hispanic populations here in Portland and throughout the world, their incredible contributions to art, literature, music, dance & etc., who wouldn't want to learn Spanish?"

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?

"I love the variety of classes, instructors, and students offering many levels of grammar, conversation, and literature. I especially enjoy finally being able to read poetry, stories, politics, histories and cultures - in Spanish!"

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?

"Just recently I had a fun experience in my local library when I shared a table with a small, Spanish-speaking boy and his non-English-speaking grandmother. I was reading “La Sorpresa del Jardinero" ( a wonderful children's book with lots of pictures) and we ended up reading several books together, giggling at silly words and ourselves. I gained a bit more confidence in my burgeoning conversation skills."

¡Felicidades Candace!
