August 2013 - Reed McDowell

Reed McDowellWith an infectiously upbeat attitude, Reed’s presence inspires all around him to adopt a rosier view of life. Since retiring from his career as a civil engineer, he has pursued learning the Spanish language with remarkable intent, utilizing a winning combination of group and private classes at Tierra, self-study, and immersion abroad. Motivated in part by his desire to explore the Spanish-speaking world, this year he enjoyed several weeks of studying Spanish in the Basque city of San Sebastián in northern Spain. Always up for a challenge, Reed is comfortable in environments that push his skill level and rises to the occasion with grace.  His enthusiasm for Spanish and commitment to learning shine through in every activity, assignment, and conversation, making Reed a model student we’re delighted to have in the Tierra community.

Name:  Reed McDowell
Occupation:  Retired Civil Engineer
Time Studying at Tierra:  I started studying at Tierra in February, 2012.

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"I love to travel abroad, and have realized how much more meaningful the experience is to be able to speak the language of the countries I visit.  It gives me so much more connection to the people and enriches the experience of travelling.  Learning a new language is just a lot of fun for me, expands my perspectives on the world and provides opportunities to better engage with people here and abroad".

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?

"Meeting the people and making new friends with those who have common interests in sharing and learning a new language, other cultures and the experience of travelling.  Since retiring in August 2011, I have embarked on what I call my second chance at an education in liberal arts.  Learning Spanish is playing a major role in that effort, and a major role in my life.  I am excited about the possibilities and opportunities that learning Spanish presents, and I am grateful to have a high quality resource like Tierra available in Portland".

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?

"I recently had the opportunity to add to the Spanish language foundation I have built at Tierra by travelling to Spain and spending three weeks at a private language school in San Sebastián.  The transition to the school there was seamless, and upon returning to Portland, Tierra is providing additional opportunities to continue learning.  Next year I hope to enroll in a school in Guanajuato, Mexico, for another 4 weeks of study, and I know that learning at Tierra will enhance that experience greatly".

¡Felicidades Reed!
