July 2019 - Kit Goujon

With an unfailingly positive attitude and endless curiosity, Kit’s love of learning is plainly evident to anyone around her. After her first year as a student at Tierra she was forced to put her studies on hold due to illness. We were thrilled to have her back after her recovery and marveled at her drive and dedication. She has many motivations to learn Spanish including her innate thirst for knowledge, her family life (she’s married to a Spaniard), and her work as a veterinarian who cares for the pets of many Spanish-speaking families. Kit is an inspiration as someone who is undeterred by any obstacles she finds in her path and who prioritizes fostering kindness and empathy. We are honored to count Kit as an esteemed member of our community at Tierra and look forward to continuing to be awed by the fruits of her hard work.

Name:  Kit Goujon
Occupation:  Veterinarian
Time Studying at Tierra:  Since January 2017, but I was then off for most of 2018 as I was going through cancer treatment and waiting for the right Spanish level to be available with my schedule.

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"The world is a friendlier and more cooperative place when we're able to communicate with each other, so my main reason for studying Spanish is to help eliminate that boundary to communication.  I work for a non-profit animal shelter and many of the people who bring their animals for medical help only speak Spanish, so learning Spanish will allow me to help more people and their pets.  My husband is also from Sevilla, Spain and learning Spanish will allow me to communicate better with his family and friends, as well as make me more self-sufficient when we're traveling."

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?

"The teachers are very patient and they make sure every student in class is progressing.  They create a fun learning environment and you never feel silly for making mistakes.  I've been lucky to have several different teachers during my time at Tierra and every single one has been amazing!"

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?

"Recently, my husband's parents were visiting from Spain.  They speak many languages fluently, but their English skills are quite limited so I spoke as much Spanish as I could so we could meet somewhere in the middle.  His mom is a retired French teacher, so she understands how students learn language and was very patient and helpful as I was stumbling through the conversation!  I speak with my husband as well, but he's not as patient as the teachers at Tierra...or his mom!"

¡Felicidades Kit!
