June 2025 - Nico Zhu

Since starting her Spanish studies in our Beginner 1 level in the Winter of 2024 Nico has shown amazing progress and great joy for learning. Originally from China, Spanish is her third language after her native Cantonese and English, in which she is fluent. Exuding positive energy and enthusiasm, Nico’s cheerful approach to learning is contagious. She has formed strong connections with her classmates, contributing to the especially close-knit dynamic of her group, and has a propensity for asking questions that help everyone discover deeper nuances in the structures they are studying. We are honored to count Nico as part of our inspiring student community and can’t wait to see her continue on her path to becoming trilingual!

Name: Nico Zhu
Occupation: Retail Store Cashier Manager
Time Studying: 1 year and a half

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"I’m studying Spanish because my boyfriend is Mexican and his family primarily speaks Spanish. I want to be able to communicate with them better (without having my boyfriend need to translate everything for me) Also, learning Spanish has also helped me connect more with my Spanish-speaking coworkers and friends and has opened my mind to their culture and their perspectives".

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?

"My favorite part has been the overall welcoming environment and the dedication of the teachers. I always feel supported and encouraged by my teacher Sophia in my class, and I honestly feel confident about my Spanish (lol) every time I leave the class. I also enjoy meeting my classmates who share the same passion for learning Spanish!"

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?

"Yes! At my new job, I’ve been able to greet and assist Spanish-speaking customers and connect with my Spanish-speaking co-workers with confidence. I also use Spanish at home with my boyfriend and his family, which has brought us closer. It’s exciting to see that me learning Spanish is making a real difference in my day to day life :)"

¡Felicidades Nico!
