Since first enrolling at Tierra two years ago, Debbie has shown great dedication and tenacity in her Spanish studies. In her work as a medical social worker, she’s had the opportunity to use her burgeoning Spanish skills to help her patients feel valued and build rapport. Passionate about travel, she and her husband Jeff, who is also a student at Tierra, have made multiple trips to Spanish-speaking countries, including hiking the Camino de Santiago in northern Portugal and Spain. Debbie has shown incredible growth in her approach to learning Spanish, becoming very adaptable and embracing the ups and downs of the learning journey. A kind and compassionate classmate, she brings positive energy and helps build camaraderie among her classmates in any group she joins. We are honored to have Debbie as part of our amazing student community and look forward to continuing to see her reach her goals and beyond.
Name: Debbie Rink
Occupation: Social Worker
Time studying at Tierra: Two years
Why are you studying Spanish?
"I am studying Spanish to improve my skills when visiting Spanish-speaking countries, strengthen my cognition, and socialize. My husband, Jeff, and I are planning a trip to Barcelona June 2027, for another hiking adventure and expect that improving my Spanish skills will help when traveling".
What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?
"My favorite part of studying at Tierra is that the instructors are amazing, supportive and encourage me to continue practicing and improving my skills. I enjoy the in person class environment, meeting other students and hearing about their interests and experiences in life".
Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?
"Since studying at Tierra, I have improved my understanding of the Spanish language and am able to communicate a bit when visiting Spain. Additionally, my husband, Jeff (also a student at Tierra) and I communicate at home and watch various television shows in Spanish and/or with Spanish subtitles. Finally, as a medical Social Worker I encounter some Spanish-speaking patients. Though a professional interpreter assists me with the appointments, I am able to understand and practice speaking with the patients and the interpreter. Overall, there are many opportunities to practice at class, home, travel and work".
¡Felicidades Debbie!
